WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?? What is best for you?
BASIC EDIT VS A RETOUCH EDIT: The choice between editing and photo retouching will depend on your specific needs and goals when post-processing your images, whether for personal use or commercial purposes. Both techniques have advantages and disadvantages, and it's important to know your needs to choose the best suited for your situation.
EDITING TECHNIQUES: All photographers & editors are not equal. Different editing techniques are based on the photographer/editorโs style and knowledge.
BASIC EDIT: Basic editing techniques, such as color correction, exposure adjustment, contrast adjustment, sharpness adjustment, cropping, and resizing, can be used individually or in combination to achieve the desired effect.
MINOR RETOUCH: A basic edit is applied without any extensive skin retouching. Simple distractions and minor blemishes (ex, light acne, light scars, scratches, etc) will be removed to a certain degree, which varies per person. Sometimes, a basic edit is just fine, but a minor retouch adds a look to clean up some minor imperfections that doesnโt require Photoshop.
FULL RETOUCH: On the other hand, a full photo retouch includes all basic editing features, but is a more specialized technique that is used to make subtle or significant changes to an image by removing imperfections from the background, clothing, and all types of skin. A full retouch can consist of blending skin imbalances, blending skin tones, enhancing makeup, enhancing contouring, correcting stray hairs, and much more. It's often used in commercial and fashion photography to create a polished and flawless appearance.
CONCLUSION: A basic edit is okay for most occasions, especially when capturing images in natural light and from a distance. When taking professional-grade portraits from mid-body to up close with flash is an entirely different story as flash picks up all imperfections and 100% of details. I take pride in fully retouching images, as this gives you quality over quantity when it comes to using professional-grade flash and creating dramatic images.
